Clean the grand old pictures of the divine masters; hang them up in new frames; fix them on the walls of your people’s memories, and their well-instructed hearts shall bless you.
– C.H. Spurgeon, Commenting and Commentaries
Men and Women of Church History
When we discover the lives of great Christian men and women in history, we behold our great God who has ever been moving through history. In their tears we find the tender comfort of Christ, through their weaknesses we marvel at the power of God, in their sins we behold the Savior who bled for sinners, through their prayers we find the fount of their strength, and in their mighty, blessed efforts for God we pray that once again God will move in our day.
“Lord Jesus, for the sake of thy blood and passion, hear me. Thy servants have been winnowing here, yesterday afternoon and this morning. But in vain. Not the slightest breeze has blown upon us the whole time. The Wind, Lord! The Wind, gracious Lord! For the winds are in thy hands, Lord, now as ever. Amen”
