Definition:Â
The word atonement is a theological term that is used to describe the substitutionary work of Christ. The word occurs in the KJV in Romans 5:11 and has the basic meaning of reconciliation. The word often is used in the Old Testament to translate the Hebrew words kipper and kippurim, which mean âpropitiationâ or âexpiationâ. The word atonement encompasses Christâs work of redemption on behalf of His people. The center of Christâs work, the main event to which the whole Old Testament pointed and to which the whole New Testament expounded was Christâs sacrificial death on the cross. Christâs death is the very heart of the Christian faith. It is the central theme of Scripture. â[T]he New Testament writers ascribe the saving efficacy of Christâs work specifically to His death, or blood, or His cross (Rom. iii. 25; v. 9; I Cor. x. 16; Eph. i.7; ii.13; Col. i. 20; Heb. ix.12, 14; I Pet. i. 2, 19; I John i. 7; v. 6-8; Rev. i. 5).â
