Overview of Evangelism:
Christian Evangelism is based in Jesus’ command at the end of the Gospel of Matthew. This passage is know as the great commission and is as follows: “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always to the end of the age” (Matt 28:19-20). The main command or clause in this passage is not the word “Go” as many think. The main focus of the command is “make the disciples” with the “Go” as a kind of “as you are going.” So, we might say, “Go and as you go, make disciples.” The second important command is “teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” This is the reason we are still participating in evangelism as Christians because we are still follow this command of Jesus. This commission is also repeated in Mark 16:15 and Luke 24:49.
Another important passage in regard to evangelism is found in Acts 1:8. It says, “but you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria and even to the remotest part of the earth.” This passage is a key to understanding the ongoing call to all Christians to continue the work that Jesus called the apostles to do by carrying the Gospel message to the ends of the earth.
